The 2017 Mazda6 has been on the market since 2002, but has only been a game-changer since 2012. The newly designed sedan fell in favour of many, the fresh and modern new look of the car made it a real head turner. Now for the model year 2016-2017 the Mazda6 has been slightly altered, to help it keep up to date. Certainly a necessity in the current flood of aesthetic high rollers we are in. Although the Mazda6 does not steal the show, it is undoubtedly a great looking car and a more than decent drive.
Let’s start with the face of the car. Here we can find headlights that are a bit rounder than the previous ones, giving the car a friendlier approach. The grille is wider, taller and more mature altogether. The lower fascia is also rounder and more subtle. The fog lights are now encased by chrome, triangular outline.
On the back of the car not as many changes have been made. The taillights are wider and more narrow, but that’s the only notable alteration we found.
Two body colours have been added to the optional colour palette, bringing the total choice to nine. The standard wheels got a darker paint job and have received a little glitter treatment.
More obvious changes have been made on the inside of the 2017 Mazda6. The dashboard has been redesigned completely and got some new features such as a freestanding 7 inch LCD-display. The gear shift has got a new coat and there is a rotary knob below to handle some of the car’s functions.
The centre console has been re-organized and now makes a much calmer impression. For 2017, the Grand Touring models can choose the Premium Package. This results in Nappa leather seating with contrasting stitching. Also included are a heated steering wheel with traditional Japanese chidori stitching, heated backseats and metallic touches al throughout the cabin.
The 2017 Mazda6 interior has been soundproofed by improving door seals and panels. Also, sound insulation materials have been added to bottom, sides and back of the car. The front window has been thickened and blocks out more noise from outside.
Available engine on the 2017 Mazda6 is the 2.5 liter Skyactiv-G four cylinder engine, either with a six speed manual or a six speed automatic transmission. This engine will be able to reach 184 horsepower. Touring and Grand Touring models come standard with the automatic transmission, the Sport version comes standard with the manual transmission.
For Europe the 2017 Mazda6 features a choice of three Skyactiv gasoline engines. A 145 and 165 horsepower option of the Skyactiv-G 2.0 liter engine. Also, the 192 horsepower Skyactiv-G 2.5 liter engine. Lastly, there are two diesel units: a 150 and 175 horsepower version of the Skyactiv-D 2.2 liter. Automatic and manual transmissions available.
Optional on the 2017 Mazda6 Grand Touring is the i-ELOOP system. This system generates electricity from the energy that is produced when braking, and stores it in a battery. Then it can be used to power the headlights, music system and climate control. This system is benefiting fuel efficiency magnificently.
On the 2017 Mazda6 models G-Vectoring Control is added. This increases the control on every powering segment of the car and thus is a stabilizing factor. The need for steering corrections is greatly decreased, resulting in a more comfortable and calm drive.
The 2017 Mazda6 comes standard with active driving display, Mazda Connect with internet connectivity and the i-Activesense safety package. Optional safety features on the 2017 version are Traffic Sign Recognition, Lane Keeping Assist and Advanced Blind Spot Monitoring.
