Land Rover has released new pictures of their 2017 Land Rover Discovery. The new designing ideas that Land Rover has been talking about are quite visible on these images. Also included in the newly released shots is a fascinating timeline of how the Discovery changed over the years. Up until now, we only beheld the 2017 Land Rover Discovery under a full face of make-up, denying us every glimpse of detail. We have to say, this picture of the Discovery’s face does not disappoint us at all. Now we are curious if Land Rover can excite even more with the engine and interior. Let’s find out in this review.
We’ve studied the many spy shots and the recently released picture of the Discovery’s front side intensely. Hence, it is safe to say that the 2017 Land Rover Discovery was greatly inspired by the exterior design of the modern 2017 Range Rover Evoque crossover SUV or convertible. Since Range Rover is a daughter company of Land Rover, this is no more than logical. We even suspect the new Discovery to sport Range Rover’s lightweight aluminium chassis. This won’t only cut weight, but will improve performance and fuel efficiency. The latter being something the current Discovery could definitely use.
The overall front side of the Discovery looks a lot like the Evoque’s face. Especially the width of the car is more like the Evoque than the previous Discovery. However, when zooming in, you can see the individual details are incomparable. For starters, the headlights have a different shape. They are not as large and square as the previous Discovery headlights, but are more similar to the Evoque’s in terms of size. Even so, their shape is not alike.
The front grille of the 2017 Land Rover Discovery has been downsized to match the smaller headlights. Also, the grille’s structure is less bulky. Below the headlights are two vertical air vents, instead of the square-shaped vents on the Evoque. Also, where the Evoque sports another large air vent, the 2017 Discovery features an imitation skid plate. It’s reminiscent of a bygone era of off-road driving, but does not provide any support against off-road obstacles. However, the chrome colour is cool and classy.
Lastly, the mist lights aren’t round lamps anymore, but two barely visible stripe LEDs in both corners of the fascia
Starting with the infotainment touch screen, it has a diameter of eight inch. Eight clickable buttons positioned on both sides of the screen and large touch-sensitive buttons on the screen itself. Under the infotainment screen there’s a rotary gear knob. Next to that are the knobs for the Terrain Management system and air ride suspension.
The steering wheel is almost an exact copy of the Range Rover’s. However, the gauges in the Land Rover Discovery remain analog, as was the case in the prototype. So although the 2017 Land Rover Discovery is a very modern piece of automotive design, the gauges refused to take on the digital lay-out.
All in all, the full cabin look is a simplistic and basic one, one that is also found in the American effigy of the Discovery, the off-road spectacle, the 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee Trailhawk SUV crossover.
Although the precise specifications of the engine choice aren’t available yet, we can make a good guess of what is coming up. Land Rover recently put in a supercharged gasoline engine with forced induction intake systems and a turbocharged diesel engine.
Other options for the 2017 Land Rover Discovery are a revised 3.0 liter V6 and a supercharged 5.0 liter V8. Both are already being used in other Land Rover cars and with a bit of adaptation could be put in the Discovery. They both have more power and better fuel efficiency. These are two things that would be of big advantage to the Discovery. Don’t be surprised to find a hybrid version as well.
We expect some standard tech features, to be: Airbag occupancy sensor, InControl Protect Emergency S.O.S and a back-up camera. Optional features are going to be: lane keeping assist, blind spot sensor and lane departure warning. Also optional are forward and rear collision warning with automatic braking, a 360 degrees camera and automated parking sensors.
For further information on software and technology gimmicks, we will have to wait for a bit. We are sure Land Rover can come up with a nice array of features and tricks to make driving easier, more comfortable and most importantly, safer. It would be great to see a relatively wide arrangement of tech features, like the affordable and top speed 2016 Jeep Renegade crossover has.
The 2017 Land Rover Discovery is after all a luxury SUV and will grow into that even more with the new design.
Price, reveal and sale date
The revealing of the 2017 Land Rover Discovery is planned to take place at the Paris Auto Show on the 28th of September. We will finally be able to see the production vehicle in its true light. We are very curious and excited!
Pricing information is unfortunately not available yet. It is not sure whether Land Rover will bring this car to the US too, but it is likely. This type of luxury and flashy design is always a hit on the US market. Therefore, it would be a shame if the Discovery wouldn’t get the chance to impress the Americans. If it would be released on American markets, it would listen to the name Land Rover LR5 instead of 2017 Discovery.
