Trailhawk is a title for top notch Jeep models. It first made its appearance in 2012 as an Easter Jeep Safari concept. The concept was so well received by the public that Jeep added it as a trim to the 2014 Cherokee and polished, improved and enhanced 2016 Jeep Renegade. The 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee Trailhawk will be Jeep’s best-selling SUV perfected for off-road circumstances. That is, until the iconic off-road 2018 Jeep Wrangler will see its release.
The name Trailhawk stands for a high off-road performance. The trim will be best suited to people who like to combine a contemporary, tough exterior combined with great performance on difficult roads. It seems there are a lot of those, since the previous Trailhawk models were among the brand’s bestsellers. It is only logical that Jeep’s best SUV also gets the Trailhawk trim.
The exterior of the 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee Trailhawk is exactly like the 2016 Grand Cherokee 75th Anniversary Edition. An interesting change is that the lower front fascia can be removed, which is very convenient when going off-road. Furthermore the Grand Cherokee has high placed air vents and electrical features. That way, driving through water of up to 20 inches is completely safe.
The available exterior colours for the 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee Trailhawk are Redline Red, Bright White, Billet Silver, Diamond Black Crystal, Rhino, Granite Crystal and Velvet Red. These colours are all available on other Grand Cherokee trims as well, so nothing new there.
Furthermore, some special Trailhawk elements are grey door mirrors, grey roof rack and red “Trail-Rated” badges all over the car. Finally, the 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee Trailhawk distinguishes itself from the other models by its signature red tow hooks that protrude from the front and rear bumper. Then, standard skid plates and a special Mopar rock rails addition is available, so that serious off-roading won’t easily damage your car.
Finally, the hood is embellished by a matte-black decal, which not only looks cool, but functions as an anti-glare system, too.
The Grand Cherokee Trailhawk’s interior is a dark and handsome one. The seats are a black leather with suede on the backrests and seat cushions. The seats feature a distinctive red Trailhawk stitched badges, as does the steeringwheel and the red stitching returns on the doors and center console.
Furthermore, the Trailhawk interior features wonderful shiny black and gunmetal inserts, which really adds to the luxurious feel the car emits.
The standard infotainment screen on the Trailhawk is the 8.4 inch with Chrysler’s Uconnect software. The audio in the car is decided by a regular brandless system, or at a premium a Harman Kardon or Alpine sound system.
Let’s see what the off-road special 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee Trailhawk has to offer us. The standard engine on the Trailhawk is the 3.6 liter Pentastar V6 engine with Variable Valve Timing. The engine delivers a maximum of 290 horsepower. Next up is the 5.7-Liter HEMI V8 Engine with Multi Displacement System which makes 360 horsepower. Finally, there’s a 3.0 liter EcoDiesel V6 engine that delivers 240 horsepower.
All engines come coupled with an eight speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters, adjustable air suspension and Jeep’s personal Quadra-Trac II four wheel drive system. The latter is unmissable when driving off-road or in heavy weather conditions. The system has sensors in all four tires. Then, it can automatically send up to 100% of engine power to the wheel or wheels that have the most traction. This way the car will be minimally impacted by road and weather conditions. In other words, no need to steer out of a slip anymore!
Rumour has it that somewhere in 2017 Jeep will release another Grand Cherokee model, the Trackhawk, equipped with the 707 horsepower HellCat engine. That is something that will give the V8-equipped prominent pick-up truck 2017 Dodge RAM 1500 a run for its money.
The infotainment system is operated by UConnect and offers Jeep’s Off-Road pages. This feature offers an overview of the four wheel drive system, suspension height and wheel articulation, among other relevant off-road information. The infotainment system can be upgraded to NAV, which adds a navigation system, integrated voice command with Bluetooth and an Auto-Dimming Rear View Mirror. Furthermore, Roadside Assistance, SiriusXM digital radio and a five year subscription to SiriusXM TravelLink and Traffic Service.
The 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee Trailhawk also offers a Hill ascent and descent functionality. This feature can be turned on when going off-road and the car will then automatically accelerate and brake when needed. The speed can be changed by using the paddle shifters.
The Trailhawk Luxury Group offers Automatic High Beams. Blind Spot and Cross Path Detection can be bought individually at a premium.
Additional safety features can be bought in the Jeep Active Safety Group. The package consists of: Adaptive Cruise Control with stop, Advanced Brake Assist and Lane Departure Warning. Also, there’s Parallel and Perpendicular Park Assist and Rain Sensitive Windshield Wipers.
