In 2018, Ford will release a new small SUV model on the North-American market, an overdue addition to their collection of large, larger, largest SUVs. The 2018 Ford EcoSport has been on other markets since 2014 and is now supposed to compete with other compact crossover models.
Examples include the organic and round 2017 Mazda CX-3 and the fantastic little 2016 Jeep Renegade. The smaller SUVs that were put out recently drew the American public unexpectedly well. All in all, this may be the reason Ford is now also releasing their first ever compact crossover in the US. However, the compact crossover segment is quite wide already, so it is far from certain that the 2018 Ford EcoSport will make the cut.
Only if the car can offer some exceptional features it might stand a chance, but at the first look these aren’t easy to find. Check out the full review and decide for yourself if the 2018 EcoSport could become a publics favourite.
As always, we will begin by discussing the particular model’s exterior. The 2018 EcoSport is a cool looking crossover with the trademark Ford grille. On this model it has the same shape, but different grille patterns with three wide chrome strips. Also, behind it there’s a darker mesh-type pattern. Another typical Ford feature is the lower air dam, which is surrounded by an insert so it looks larger. Then finally, there are the diagonal headlights and triangular foglights that give the car its lightly aggressive look.
The side of the car defines itself by the relatively small wheels and high stance of the vehicle. The lower part of the car is puffed out and nicely flows around the wheel arches as well. There’s a body line that flows from the front to the back through the lower outline of the side windows. It goes up, and underneath it there’s another body line that continues all the way to the back in a slightly upwards way.
The rear of the car expresses itself by the wrap around rear window, the typical Ford taillights, the dark bumper and the silver-coloured insert on it. Furthermore, there aren’t many remarkable features about the 2018 Ford EcoSport exterior.
There is a total of ten different exterior colours available.
All in all, the car looks decent enough, though it’s not the most appealing compact crossover out there. It’s quite a generic overall look, and it looks more like an oversized hatchback than like a small SUV. If a compact crossover is released, it may need to offer some more spunk to really be able to compete here.
Unlike the exterior of the 2018 EcoSport, the inside is a total refreshment to look at. A contemporary interior design favourite, the wraparound dashboard, is present and there’s a pretty large infotainment screen that catches the eye. The center stack looks clean enough and all the air vents have a nice angular design.
The EcoSport interior is available with cloth seats, partial leather seats or full leather seats, all in a dark (black) hue. The North-American version of the EcoSport gets the option of a contrasting interior colour. Possibly, the European EcoSport will receive this too in a later stadium. On some press images that colour is orange, but it’s expected that there will be other different colours as well.
The car’s standard features are an audio system with six speakers, AUX and USB ports, a cooled dashboard partition and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. Finally, the car features standard Submarine ambient lighting. Optional on higher trims of the 2018 Ford EcoSport is an automatic air conditioning system with a pollen filter.
The optional sound system is a Bang & Olufsen PLAY with 10 speakers including, tweeters, woofers and a subwoofer.
Finally, the EcoSport has rear seats that can fold down into the floor for extra cargo space. Much needed, because there isn’t much in the car. All in all, the EcoSport interior looks more than decent, it seems like a nice atmospheric space to be transported in. Unfortunately legroom may be limited.
The engine options for the 2018 Ford EcoSport are limited, but sufficient. One option is a 1.0 liter three cylinder Ford EcoBoost engine with horsepower count of 125. The other engine option is a 2.0 liter four cylinder. The latter will come equipped with Ford’s Intelligent Four Wheel Drive system. The last US engine is not known yet, but an engine with a bit more power is likely. We expect to see a 2.0 liter non-EcoBoost engine that delivers around 160 horsepower. Otherwise, one of the engine choices for the 2017 Ford Fusion sedan will make their return on the EcoSport.
All engines come with automatic transmission.
Now finally, here is the part where the EcoSport can really make a difference against its competition.
The car’s infotainment screen operates with Ford’s infotainment software SYNC 3. The system also supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and is now easier and more intuitive to operate.
Optional tech features include HD Radio and SiriusXM satellite radio. Also, with SYNC Connect and FordPass drivers can operate their vehicle from almost anywhere. The car can be locked, unlocked and located, and the mobile app allows the owners to view things like the fuel level when not in the car.
Safety features include Blind Spot Monitoring with Cross Traffic Alert and automatic braking system, which turns the car into a semi-autonomous driving vehicle.
Ford promised a wide array of semi-autonomous features on the car. Hence, we expect more info on this to drop in closer to the car’s release date.
Price and sale date
