In 2017 the new Opel Insignia II is going to be released on European markets, which means that a new Buick Regal is never far away. Buick is busily developing away and last week the first spy shots appeared on the internet. Unsurprisingly, it’s almost a twin of the Opel Insignia II, aside from the backside and dimensions. Read further to find out just what to expect from the Regal 2018.
The Buick Regal 2018 spy shots betrayed that there won’t be much exterior difference between the European Insignia and the American Regal. The most noticable difference is the fact that the spied Buick Regal 2018 is a sedan, whereas the Insignia has been seen as a hatchback. Then again, the Insignia will also be released as a four-door sedan, so maybe the Insignia hatchback blueprint will be sent to the Buick headquarters as well, together with the estate blueprint. At this point it’s still unclear whether or not the Regal is going to be a sedan-only model version, just like the last Regal is.
Interesting fact is that General Motors has trademarked the name “TourX”, which is so similar to Opel’s variant “Tourer” that it’s likely Buick will also release a station wagon or estate variant of the Regal. The wagon version is confirmed by spy shots of the long vehicle. It looks amazing!
The 2018 Buick Regal can also be compared with a downsized verzion of the Buick LaCrosse 2017, and dimensionwise it will be bigger and longer than the last Regal was, also because the Insignia has increased in size from the last one.
The Regal roofline is more sloped, for less drag and better fuel economy. As said before, it will be slightly longer than the last’s, even though the wheelbase is going to be about four inches longer. This means a big expansion of backseat legroom, which is always welcome and definitely ups the public value of a car. This would do the sales of the Buick Regal 2018 some good, since one of the biggest downsides about the car was that the backseat legroom was tight.
Overall the Buick Regal 2018 will look much sharper than the last one, taking over some styling features from the Opel Monza concept 2013.
Due to a new lightweight steel platform the car is going to be much lighter, the cut is going to be at least 440 pounds and maybe even more.
The only part where the Regal really differs from its Insignia twin is the back side. This is obviously because a hatchback and a sedan have different rears as such, so if that’s the only big difference one can expect the cars to be almost exactly the same. Since the Opel Insignia will only be officialy reveiled at this October’s Frankfurt Motor Show, there is furthermore not much to say about the appearance. One month later the Buick Regal 2018 will be reveiled and then we can find out in what ways they differ.
As all new cars released the Buick Regal 2018 will coe with a medium-sized or large TFT touch screen on the centre console. A real possibility is a digital display for the gauges and the displaying of other car functions, inspired by the 2013 Opel Monza Concept. Now, obviously it won’t be as wide as the dashboard as it was there, but a reasonable sized digital display right above the steering wheel is something we expect, possibly customizeable as well. At least, it’s being worked on in Germany for getting featured on the Insignia.
Of course, there will also be a TFT touch screen on the centre console, probably in two sizes depending on if it’s a lower or higher trim of the model.
The rest of the interior is going to look sleek, modern and simplistic, with a retake on excess buttons and lines. Inspired by the last Regal’s interior, the 2018 Regal will be retouched and have added design details to show that the car has been developed enough.
Now on to an important part of the car, for what is it worth if there is little or no choice in engines? There is not much information available yet on which engines will be available for choice, but since for now there are only the sedan and probably estate that will be released as a model, it’s possible that there will be more engines to choose from.
What is most likely to occur is that there will be an All Wheel Drive and a Front Wheel Drive option. The AWD is very popular in the USA for sedans, so we think Buick will not let this sales gimmick slip. Furthermore, there are the current Regal’s engines, a 2.4-liter four-cylinder half hybrid or a 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder that makes 259 horsepower. It is unlikely that the 2.4 liter four-cylinder will return (at least not standard), an option is that the 1.5 liter turbocharged engine will be adopted together with the steel platform from the Chevy Malibu.
The Opel Monza concept had a plug-in hybrid engine, so hopefully the Regal won’t only adopt the Monza’s styling, but will also offer this engine option.
Aside from a gasoline driven engine, Buick is going to be releasing a diesel driven engine as well, since these are also gaining popularity in the USA. Automatic transmission is going to be standard, possibly a manual transmission will be optional.
Talking tech now, there’s the software that needs to be operating the touch screen on the centre console. This is going to be Opel’s OnStar technology, as is operated on cars by General Motors, such as Bucik, Cadillac and Chevrolet.
OnStar offers a series of functions such as Stolen Vehicle Tracking, handsfree calling, navigation and emergency assistance. The OnStar software will also turn the Regal into a car wi-fi hotspot, to be able to operate the software.
The usual Lane Departure warning and adaptive cruise control are so well developed that they are expected to appear on every new car with software. The Monza concept featured a function for reducing distractions during driving and we are expecting this feature to make its production appearance on the Buick Regal. Furthermore, we expect a Forward Collision Warning, autonomous braking system, keyless unlocking and starting the car (optional) and much more.
Price, reveal and sale date
The Regal will be released in 2018, the exact date is not known yet. The Opel Insignia has been shown driving the roads in full glory and it will see its official release at the Geneva Motor Show. It is expected that the 2018 Regal will see its release after that date.
Prices for the current Buick Regal start at $27,000. There is no reason to believe the new Regal will deviate from these.
The latest spy shots of the 2017 Opel Insignia sedan and wagon have been added. It is now visible without camouflage!
