The 2018 model year is a very promising one thus far. Many of the most relevant car brands will release an updated version of their most relevant models and so will BMW. The 4 series has not always been an important model in the BMW line, but used to be the BMW 3 series before 2013.
The Gran Coupe release in 2014 intended to fill up BMW‘s lack of compact four-door coupes and now 2018 offers the somewhat necessary mid-cycle touch up. Not only necessary because the original model is from three years ago, which is ages in the car manufacturing world, but also because its main competitor, the clean, sharp and high-class 2017 Audi A5 Sportback, got its redesign for 2017. So, the 2018 BMW 4 series Gran Coupe has some hands to fill with the refreshment it brings.
The Gran Coupe is a funky-looking four-door and BMW did their best to make it as appealing as possible, for the BMW customer may not be all that enthusiastic about some funk in their wheels.
Of course, the 2018 BMW 4 series Gran Coupe is heavily based on the standard two-door 4 series. That means most of the redesign cues that the two-door received will also make their return on the four-door.
First off, the headlights feature new LED-lamps, besides rocking the same size and shape like previously. The LED-lamps are two strips that are shaped like sideways question marks. Although the changes are minimal, the LED-strips do give the face of the 4 series quite a fresh look. Also new are the full LED foglights and a larger air intake right above the bumper.
The LED pattern in the taillights changed similarly to the headlights. This is the only really noteworthy change on the rear part of the car. Furthermore, the 2018 BMW 4 series Gran Coupe is available in two new colours, Snapper Rocks Blue and Sunset Orange. Also, a new wheel design is available for some trims.
The interior also features only a few changes, like on the exterior. The details in the car are now electroplated and on offer is a new chrome trims. The dashboard now has a double stitched line instead of just a single one.
Then, the centre console looks a bit more up-class with a high-gloss finish. Finally, the buyer of the 4 series Gran Coupe has an extended choice of three new upholstery colours and three new trim strips.
Standard on the 2018 BMW 4 series Gran Coupe is a nine speaker sound system with USB port and AM/FM stereo. Also standard are an electrochromic rear view mirror, which automatically dims when headlights of the car behind you shine into it and a leather steering wheel.
In Europe, there is a wide choice of engine options, though not as many as the regular 4 series coupe offers. The United States will have two make do with two gasoline engines.
The first engine that will be offered in both the United States and Europe is the 430i. This engine is a 2.0 liter four-cylinder, good for 252 horsepower and needing around six seconds to hit 60 mph (100 kph). Top speed lies at 155 mph (250 kph) and is available with either rear wheel drive or xDrive (BMW’s intelligent four wheel drive system). Finally, the engine can be powered by a six speed manual or eight speed automatic transmission box. The engine is the same one that features on the top notch 2017 BMW 5 series
The second engine on offer on both continents is the 440i, with a 3.0 liter six-cylinder engine, good for 326 horsepower. Powered by xDrive and the eight speed automatic transmission, this engine makes 60 mph in 5.2 seconds.
The engines only available in Europe consist of one gasoline engine and four diesels. The gasoline engine is the 420i, with a 2.0 liter four-cylinder engine that makes 181 horsepower.
Then, the diesel line-up starts with the 418d, only available on the 4 series Gran Coupe line. It uses a 2.0 liter four cylinder turbodiesel, making 147 horsepower. The 420d uses the same engine, but is differently tweked and makes 187 horsepower. Furthermore, there’s the 430d and 435d xDrive, which both have a six-cylinder diesel engine and make 254 and 309 horsepower respectively. God, it would be good to live in Europe!
The software for operating the Navigation and infotainment system have been updated to become more intuitive. The large control pads on the touch screen can be customized according to personal preference. Also, the 2018 BMW 4 series Gran Coupe has the option of Multifunctional Instrument Display, offering the driver a choice of different lay-outs for the displays, depending on which driving mode is selected. Driving modes are a range of five different modes and are each perfected for the most comfortable driving experience. The latter is a feature ultimately inspired by the flashy yet luxurious 2017 Audi A4.
Price, release and sale date
Pricing information on the 2018 BMW 4 series Gran Coupe is not yet available, but we expect it not to stray too far from the current pricing. That means a starting price of around $42,500 for the 430i and a starting price of around $52,000 for the 440i xDrive. Remember that BMW offers a large range of personal customization options, sometimes at a premium.
