BMW released a beautiful plug-in hybrid vehicle this year. It’s only just arrived in US showrooms and is a lovely addition to the regular BMW 7 Series. The 2017 BMW 740e iPerformance is one of two hybrid 7 serie models. The other plug-in hybrid BMW model is the 740LE, which is a longer version of the 740e and comes with optional BMW xDrive all wheel drive.
The BMW 740e is expected to do well in Europe. In spirit of eco-friendliness many European city centers banned all car traffic except for hybrid and electric vehicles. The people who need or want to drive there need an eco-friendly vehicle to be able to do that. However, not everyone is charmed by cute and funky EVs like the green eco-friendly 2017 Chevrolet Bolt electric vehicle. For these people, car manufacturers like BMW and Porsche turn some of their appreciated luxury vehicles into hybrid or electric cars. The 2017 BMW 740e iPerformance definitely belongs to this category.
The 740e is basically the 2016 BMW 7 series model with a few small changes to mark the car being a hybrid. On the left side of the car, right next to the wheel arch, the car’s charging port is located.
Other notable differences with the regular 7 series are the blue shades that come with an electric BMW. This can be noticed on the double kidney grille, where the additional lines in between the chrome vertical strips are blue instead of chrome. Also, the headlights have a blue hue around the lamps and all over the car eDrive, i and 740e badges can be found.
Here applies the same rule again: don’t expect too much difference with the 7 series. Of course, the digital gauges will include a power percentage and charging status indication. For the rest, the same premium materials can be found in the cabin. Eighteen different shades of leather in either regular or exclusive leather can be chosen when configuring the car. Also, the choice for dashboard and doorpanel inserts is up to ten different colours. On top of that, a personal customization is also possible and can be discussed at your personal BMW dealership.
Also available in the 2017 BMW 740e IPerformance is the terrific Bowers & Wilkins Diamond Surround Sound System, one that, to our great contentment, we have experienced before in the upscale cabin of the 2017 Volvo V90 wagon. Ambient lighting adds up to a most comfortable driving experience.
The 740e plug-in hybrid is powered by both a gasoline engine and an electric battery. The engine is 2.0 liter four cylinder engine. The 2017 BMW 740e IPerformance is the first 7 series car that has a four cylinder engine instead of a V6. However, this four cylinder is the most powerful one BMW has ever created and carries the title of Efficient Dynamics engine. Of course, the extra power from the electric battery also makes up for the less horsepower from the toning down of the engine. When driving using only the gas engine, the hp is 258. This number makes the 740e a great rival of the future 2018 Lamborghini Urus SUV plug-in hybrid.
The gas engine also operates as an electric generator for the battery. Waste power that is not used by the engine is transformed into energy and stored in the battery. So, the 740e functions as a regular hybrid too.
The electric engine is a synchronous motor that produces 113 HP and is always running. The electric engine also works as a generator. Power from braking and unused power from the engine are used to create electricity and is stored in the 9.2 kWh li-ion battery. The battery is elegible for fast-charging.
The 2017 BMW 740e IPerformance is in both Europe and the USA only available with an eight speed steptronic automatic transmission.
The driver can influence the electric and gas engine through choosing Auto or Max eDrive Mode. In Auto Mode the car’s computer decides the best balance in using the gas and electric engine. Max eDrive allows the car to drive only on the electric motor up until 87 mph (140 kilometers). At higher speeds than that the gasoline engine automatically joins in.
The 2017 BMW 740e Iperformance comes with a range of four optional driving modes. Sport, Comfort, Eco Pro and Adaptive. The last one is perfect for people who are not so fond of all these different choices. Adaptive mode lets the car’s computer decide which driving mode is the optimal one based on the current driving style.
Other notable tech features that are taken over from the regular BMW 7 series are Real Time traffic Info and Concierge Service. This last one allows you to connect directly to a BMW call centre agent who will act as your personal assistant. When you need the best or closest restaurant the agent will look it up for you and send directions directly to your navigation system. No extra costs are billed and Concierge Service is available 24/7.
Intelligent Emergency Call triggers when an airbag or the belt tensioners are activated. An automatic call to the BMW call centre is made and relevant details from the car’s SIM-card are sent to them. They will offer assistance until emergency service arrives. IEC can also be activated manually, when the driver is the witness of an accident that requires assistance.
Furthermore, things like Remote Services, Online Entertainment and a Wifi hotspot can be opted.
A navigation system is optional, as is: Steering and lane control assistant, parking assistant and a 360 degree camera. Also, a night vision camera notices people and large animals from a far distance and notifies the driver with a red warning light when they pose an acute risk.
Price and sale date
The 2017 BMW 740e has gone on sale in both Europe and the USA already. USA prices for the 740e start at $90,000, and European prices start somewhere around €93,000.
