Late last year, Audi finally confirmed a new A8 would hit showrooms in 2018. Since then, the 2018 Audi A8 had some publicity by rolling on the Nürburgring and more recently in snowy weather up North in Sweden. In these spy shots the car is pretty well visible, although it’s all camo’ed up. Also, the A8 spyshots are much more exciting than any other recently spotted camouflaged car. Two things about the prototype stand out, which is the width and enormous body roll it has when in a road curve.
Check out the 2018 Audi A8 current details in the rest of the review!
Normally, there is not that much to say about prototypes like the A8. The spy shots are grainy, taken from awkward angles and the camouflage and sometimes thick padding hides the car’s specific shape.
Funny enough, with the new A8 no padding can hide the increase in width that the prototype shows. The rest of the vehicle’s size and shape look similar to its predecessor, except for the width. Considering Audi recently came up with a new grille look for their models, we can see the 2018 Audi A8 as the perfect podium to flagship this new design cue. The new grille is named Singleframe and is wider than ever before, check it out on the pictures below.
Check back with us around the time of unveiling to see images and read about the production vehicle! We expect it to take on competitors like the automotive design heavyweight, the 2017 BMW 5 series.
The interior with prototypes is always a bit more problematic to talk about, since spy shots pretty much never reveal any details of the cabin atmosphere. Luckily, Audi is one of those car manufacturers that isn’t known for its trailblazing capacities in vehicle design. Even better, Audi is especially known for their incessant recycling of design cues on their other models.
That means that although we have no images or clues about the interior, we can almost guarantee which look Audi will go for. For now, we’ll just show you a picture of the current A8 interior and you will have to believe us when we tell you not to expect that many changes.
What you can expect however, is the amount of buttons around the centre console to diminish. Also, usually a larger infotainment screen gets put in when the interior is only updated. However, the A8 interior was already very high-class, so for the 2018 Audi A8, that might even be left out. We expect the audio contracts with BOSE and Bang and Olufsen will be renewed and both manufacturers offer a premium sound system. Finally, we expect the steering wheel to feature the Singleframe grille outline with the Audi logo in it.
Finally, expect the astounding quality interior of the luxurious 2017 Audi A5 to be an inspiration for the 2018 Audi A8.
Audi will keep the wide range of gasoline and diesel engines their A8 and other models offer. However, it is unlikely that any new or updated engines will be added to the line-up. That’s why we expect horsepower output to remain the same. The V6 and V8 engines from before will surely return on the 2018 A8.
What actually is very visible in the Nürburgring spy shots is that Audi is experimenting with the suspension of the A8.
The overhang and body roll of the 2018 Audi A8 prototype is through the roof and definitely needs some finetuning. Still, it’s good to see the A8 gets the best possible care and a slightly new driving experience.
The 2018 Audi A8 will come standard with touch Navigation and radio on the infotainment screen. Optional at a premium will be digital TV and radio connectivity, like on the predecessor, as is Rear Seat Entertainment.
Probably standard on the new Audi A8 is going to be the Rear View Camera that is still optional on the current A8. Another feature we expect to become standard is the Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop&Go function and Audi Pre Sense front. Pre Sense Basic is currently standard and Pre Sense Plus and Rear will remain optional.
Then, Active Lane Assist is also a good competitor to make it on the standard safety feature list. When it does, the standard 2018 Audi A8 will be a semi-autonomous vehicle. Really, this is essential for Audi to remain relevant in the luxury car segment. Other vehicles in its price range, like the highest trim of the classy and traditional 2017 Mercedes-Benz E-Class are ahead.
Features like Night Vision Assistant, Head-Up Display and Parking Assistant will remain optional.
Price, release and sale date
The current price of the Audi A8 is €82,800 in Germany. Converted to US Dollars, this price would make around $92,000 and that’s what we expect it would make.
The unveiling of the 2018 Audi A8 will take place at a European Auto Show this year, the car will go on sale across Europe and the US at the end of 2017.
