The 2017 Audi A5 marks the start of the second generation of A5 models. The car has been on the market since 2007, had a nice revision in 2012 and is now ready for the next level. Things that are upgraded include the fuel efficiency, the engine power and the available technological and software features. Audi always strives to create the best possible vehicles and that’s how they made name as a premium automobile manufacturer. Needless to say, this name leads to a reputation to keep up and Audi is bringing everything into play to achieve this.
Look at the list of Audi models from the 2015, 2016 and 2017 model years and see how long it is. No other car manufacturer releases this many models while the quality of the vehicles remains the same or even increases. Let’s see if the 2017 Audi A5 lives up to the high expectations of the public.
Audi is a brand that is known and respected for its classy and traditional exteriors. This means it would not be like Audi to change their repetitively winning team and they haven’t. The 2017 Audi A5 is definitely Audi: clean, sharp and high-class. Also, it looks a lot like the best exterior design of the 2017 Audi A4 sedan.
Starting at the front, the new platform has made an impact. The upcoming A5 is less wide than the last A5 model, which makes it look more elegant and a lot less bulky. The grille is wider, features more chrome and now has a hexagonal shape. The headlights and the lower air vents are also smaller and less wide.
Although the platform is less wide than the last Audi A5’s, it is longer. The aesthetic advantage is that the roof flows beautifully into the rear. Also, the Audi A5 is going to be released as a two door vehicle, which only enhances the length of the car. On the back of the car the features have been toned down according to the width of the car and it all just looks better. The taillights are smaller, although they sport the same overall shape as the 2016 A5 taillights did.
As does the exterior of the 2017 Audi A5, the interior has been much inspired by the A4. For example, the air vent that runs over the whole dashboard has been adopted. Also, the three spoke steering wheel and digital screen above that are inspired by the A4. The whole interior emits a luxurious and Audi-proof feel. All the materials used are of an astounding quality, even on the lower trims.
Ambient lighting with 30 different options is available on higher trims. Audi cooperated with Bang & Olufsen to offer a premium sound system as optional.
Audi invested in soundproofing the A5 as much as possible and claims that noise levels are one of the lowest ever.
Available on higher trims is Audi’s virtual cockpit digital instrument cluster, which replaces the gauges with one big 12.3 inch screen where information can be consulted. Besides this, there will also be a terrific 8 inch infotainment screen on top of the centre console. The regular infotainment screen is 7 inch.
For Europe, the 2017 Audi A5 comes with a range of five different engine options. An advantage of the high amount of models that Audi releases yearly is that they are able to offer a big choice of engines. After all, every engine can be put in at least three different models, which increases the likelihood of earning back the production costs.
For starters, there’s the 2.0L TFSI, four-cylinder turbocharged gasoline engine that uses direct and port fuel injection. HP lies at 252 and this engine has made its appearance in the Audi A6 before. It comes with either a six speed manual or a new seven speed dual-clutch transmission. This engine will be the only one that’s going to be available on the US market.
The 2.0 liter TDI engine is a diesel engine and makes 190 horse power. Here manual and automatic transmission can be chosen too. The other diesel engine is a 3.0 liter TDI V6 that makes 218 hp. We expect this engine to get carried over to the engine options of the future 2018 Audi A8 sedan.
Standard tech features are Apple CarPlay and Android Auto for operating the infotainment system in connection with your smartphone. The car also has Bluetooth Connectivity.
Optional is MMI Navigation and Audi Connect with integrated SIM-card. Audi Connect exchanges information with other connected cars to enhance driving and anticipate unexpected traffic changes. Other optional features include: lane keeping assist, predictive efficiency assistant, parking assist, adaptive cruise control with Stop&Go. Also, rear cross traffic warning, collision avoidance assist, exit warning, turning assist. and traffic sign recognition.
Then lastly there’s the Audi Connect and Safety & Service package. This includes: Audi service request, online roadside assist and automatic emergency call.
