Honda’s luxury car brand Acura is coming with an updated version of their three row SUV model MDX for the 2017 model year. Plenty is tweaked on the MDX 2017, so much in fact that the car can be categorized as a “semi-autonomous” vehicle. Most of the features present can also be found in other recently released cars. The difference is that the Acura MDX 2017 standard trim includes all these features, whereas on other models they are only available on higher trims. On top of this, the Acura MDX 2017 has a wonderful exterior design and a luxurious interior to match it. The new MDX is going to be available as a hybrid as well.
The first thing we have to say about the redesigned MDX is that overall, the features are much sharper. The headlights, the grille, the side windows and the side creases have all been nipped and tucked. Especially the front has a much tougher look now. The grille is enlarged and is now shaped more like a diamond than a triangle. The logo is centered in the middle and the metallic stroke has been left out for this year. The lower air vents are now enlarged so they look more like a unison instead of three independent vents. The headlights look sharper and the hood is rounder.
The side and back of the Acura MDX 2017 haven’t changed much. The dark-coloured plastic side and rear bumper have been replaced by a body-coloured metal sheet. Especially the chrome inserts on the lower rear fascia make the car look that much more upscale.
Seven different exterior colours are up for choice. Five wheel options are available, standard is 18 inch, the other options are all 20 inch.
Not many changes have been made on the already quite successful and comfortable 2016 interior. The dashboard on the passenger’s side has been moved a bit further away for more leg room. Furthermore, the little screen in between the tachometer and speedometer has been removed. The navigation and infotainment system still both have their own screen on the center console.
Standard on the Acura MDX 2017 are Automatic High Beam Headlights, SiriusXM Radio 2.0 and four USB charging ports. The gear shifting stick has been replaced by a more subtle system.
Different interior colour combinations are available for choice. All black or all gray with wooden tones, taupe or dark brown and black with wooden tones are some of the available options.
Moreover, optional on higher trims is to replace the middle seat on the second row with a center console and two extra USB-ports.
Standard on the current MDX model is a 3.5 liter V6 engine with Direct Gas Injection, Variable Cylinder Management and the Acura i-VTEC system. This engine is good for an astonishing 290 horsepower. However, no information on an engine upgrade has been published, so we expect Acura to keep with this engine on the new Acura MDX 2017. Standard is a nine speed transmission and front wheel drive, optional is all wheel drive.
The MDX Sport Hybrid will feature a three motor Sport Hybrid SH-AWD engine, also found in the Acura NSX and the RLX sedan. A 3.0 liter V6 engine will be combined with an integrated electric motor. A seven speed dual clutch transmission will power the front wheels. A surprising maximum of 326 horse power can be made.
Standard on higher trims is a surround-view camera with six different viewing angles. Optional Technology and Advance packages come with many features. Think of bi-directional keyless remote, remote engine start, the option for two different wheel designs and HD traffic.
The AcuraWatch software comes standard on every Acura MDX 2017 and features things like: Collision Mitigation Braking with Automatic Emergency Braking, Lane Departure Warning, Forward Collision Warning nad Lane Keeping Assist Also, Adaptive Cruise Control with Low-speed Follow and Road Departure Assist. This is what is meant with a semi-autonomous vehicle, basically every safety feature that exists comes standard on the Acura MDX 2017. The only other car manufacturer that found it just as important to put these features as standard is Volvo. As a result, we hope the following of Acura will lead to a trend in the automotive industry and make traffic a little safer.
Price and sale date
Prices for the Acura MDX 2017 have been made public recently. The standard trim will start at a price of $43,950 and the highest trim will go for $58,400. The regular MDX has gone on sale already, the hybrid will arrive in showrooms at the end of October.
Unforunately, Acura does not sell their vehicles in Europe (yet), so the Acura MDX 2017 is not going to be available in Europe.
